Syria air strikes: Will it sway Syria’s Assad?

Now the hope is that Mr Assad will change his behaviour. But what about the wider Syrian conflict? This brutal war shows no sign of ending. Many have pointed out that it is barrel bombs, artillery and bullets that are responsible for the overwhelming bulk of the deaths and mutilations in Syria, not chemical weapons, and yet it is these that prompt Western action.

There is a good measure of truth in this sentiment, though for historical and cultural reasons chemical weapons have a particular horror in the West in the wake of their use in World War One. The treaty banning them is an important disarmament agreement and its weakening threatens to unwind years of progress.

But the wider question is to what extent these latest strikes change the picture in Syria? Do they bring the conflict any closer to an end? Sadly the answer is almost certainly no.

The Commuter – 3.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐

It’s a familiar sounding plot, but it’s one that Neeson excels in, in fact, he may be too good at it by now. With all that said, The Commuter, much like Taken, Taken 2, Taken 3, Non-Stop and Schindlers List, etc is yet another fun Neeson film which you’ll probably enjoy much more than you’d be willing to admit. Rated 3.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐✨

One year till Brexit: Is the departure date set in stone?

The question posed does of course have a very short answer – the UK is leaving the EU on that date because a majority of voters in the Brexit referendum of June 2016 backed the Leave campaign. Theresa May triggered Article 50 in March of last year before she had even conceived of her snap general election, never mind called it.

We look at why the seemingly inauspicious date of March 29 2019  was chosen, what problems it has caused, and how it could become an issue as the date looms larger. Given that she is now unable to move certain ministers due to potential rebellion, it is easy to forget how powerful Mrs May appeared this time last year.

However, it is hard to understate the outcry if, for whatever reason, the UK delays their date of departure from the EU. If Theresa May even hints at such a move, there will be a cabinet revolt, a furious media, and quite possibly a leadership challenge, within a matter of days, if not hours.

The fishing row shows the UK Government would rather remain part of EU institutions than delay Article 50. For better or worse, the UK will leave the EU a year today, no matter the consequences.

Insidious – The Last Key – 3.8/5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐

For the most part, the acting is decent with Lin Shaye’s calm and pleasant presence performing exceptionally well for 74 years old. The intro is engaging and suspenseful, but as the movie unfolds, it falls apart. Not as good as the last Insidious but still worth a watch if you like the horror genre and follow the insidious series 3.8/5 ⭐⭐⭐✨

Where next for Ant and Dec and ITV?

Ant and Dec – you just can’t imagine one without the other. The pair have been inseparable for years both professionally, as Britain’s best-known presenting duo, and personally, through their longstanding friendship.

But there’s trouble in the camp following Ant’s recent arrest on suspicion of drink driving, after he was involved in a collision in south-west London on Sunday.

He also spent a period in rehab last summer for painkiller and alcohol addiction.

And now it’s uncertain what the future holds. We look at the implications for the much-loved pair and ITV as Ant seeks further treatment.

Polina – 4/5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I personally enjoyed this film. Unlike most dance films it doesn’t try to be silly or uplifting. Instead it’s more akin to a moody indie film about a young woman who has been stifled all her life finally finding her voice.

This is two parallel movies: one about Polina’s artistic progression, one about her family. However, this division is only apparent: the harsh parts with her family stress Polina’s difficulties to progress personally. And far from trying to provide an easy background to the character, the family scenes increase the overall sense of loss, both for Polina and for us viewers through the ellipses and uncertainties noted above. We are lost as she is, in a materially and emotionally unstable environment.

It’s best to experience Polina’s rebirth as it happens, which examines different forms of creative expression from a woman who desperately needs to challenge the boundaries of her life. “Polina” achieves a fantastic sense of evolution and awakening, making the slow journey through the years rewarding, without melodramatic extremes, studying a fascinating character as she begins to discover what she wants from dance instead of living up to the expectations of others. It’s a simple idea, but executed superbly by the production.

The beats of the film will be familiar to anyone who has ever watched a dance film but the sincerity of the actors and the beautiful choreography makes this incredible to watch, which in turn allowed myself to give it an uplifting  4/5 Stars★★★★.

Rated – 4/5 ★★★★
